Bharat Ek Khoj

After months of trawling through a million sites with Google, I finally manage to hunt down the title credits theme from Bharat Ek Khoj- A Discovery of India. This was a long running teleseries which formed an integral part of my childhood, directed by the venerable Mr. Shyam Benegal . I mean, he directed the teleseries, not the childhood.

I remember sleepy Sunday nights when I would be quietly captivated by the gravelly voices of Om Puri and Roshan Seth (as Nehru) recounting the 5000 year history of India from Vedic times to the modern-day independance struggle.

But the thing that instantly hooked me on was the title theme ...."Srishti ke pehle Sat nahin tha".. it had this strange, almost hypnotic effect on me. Many years later, I discovered that the theme was the Nasadiya Sukta from the Rig Veda.

Here's a translation from Sanskrit (by Prof: Raimundo Panikkar, courtesy Google)

At first was neither Being nor Nonbeing.
There was not air nor yet sky beyond.
What was wrapping? Where? In whose protection?
Was Water there, unfathomable deep?

There was no death then, nor yet deathlessness;
of night or day there was not any sign.
The One breathed without breath by its own impulse
Other than that was nothing at all.

Darkness was there, all wrapped around by darkness,
and all was Water indiscriminate, Then
that which was hidden by Void, that One, emerging,
stirring, through power of Ardor, came to be.

In the beginning Love arose,
which was primal germ cell of mind.
The Seers, searching in their hearts with wisdom,
discovered the connection of Being in Nonbeing.

A crosswise line cut Being from Nonbeing.
What was described above it, what below?
Bearers of seed there were and mighty forces,
thrust from below and forward move above.

Who really knows? Who can presume to tell it?
Whence was it born? Whence issued this creation?
Even the Gods came after its emergence.
Then who can tell from whence it came to be?

That out of which creation has arisen,
whether it held it firm or it did not,
He who surveys it in the highest heaven,
He surely knows - or maybe He does not!

What still amazes me is that the line of thinking behind this poetry is so bloody advanced- Imagine, 5000 years ago, people were contemplating philosophy, and making deeply existential enquiries into the beginning of creation.

And 5000 years hence, I am still coming to terms with where my next meal is going to come from (being a vegetarian in Singapore is notoriously difficult!)

The twist in the last couple of lines of the Nasadiya Sukta still astounds me. "He surely knows, or maybe He does Not" (know the Answer). That this comes from a "religious" source like the Rig Veda makes it all the more startling.

For the likes of me, 42 sounds like a perfect answer to the big Question of the Life, Universe and Everything. Thanks, Douglas Adams.

I too have been searching for bharat ek khoj on dvd or even vhs for a very long time without any luck. Perhaps someone should try to track down Shyam Benegal (should not be a big deal) and get firsthand information on whether any videos exist. Numerous searches on most internet shops from India and also Amazon have not produced any results. If any of you ever laid your hands on these videos, please send me a message on crypticlineage at gmail dot com. Thank you so much everyone. -VC

3 years ago when I was in Bombay, I called up few numbers from the directory and found out that the 52 episodes series is available in VHS for arounf Rs. 25,000. I considered the price to be a little high and did not buy it. Unfortunatley, I was unable to record the entire series when Zee TV telecast it last year (2004-2005). I would be happy to trade what I have with anyone for the missing episodes. I think I recorded half of it. You can reach me at KiranKumar@CRM-Strategist.Com

- IM_NITI@YAHOO.COM

Srishtee se pehle sat nahin thaa, asat bhi nahin
Antariksh bhi nahin, akash bhin nahin thaa
chhipaa thaa kyaa kahaan, kisne dhakaa thaa
us pal to agam, atal jal bhi kahaan thaa

Srishtee kaa kaun hai kartaa
Kartaa hai vaa akartaa
Oonche aakash mein rahtaa
Sada adhyaksh banaa rahtaa
Wahin sachmuch mein jaantaa..Yaa nahin bhi jaanataa
Hai kisi ko nahin pataa, nahin pataa,
Nahin hai pataa, nahin hai pataa

Weh tha hiranyagarbh srishti se pehle vidyamaan
Wahi to saare bhoot jaat ka swami mahaan
jo hai astitvamaana dharti aasmaan dhaaran kar
Aise kis devta ki upasana karein hum avi dekar

Jis ke bal par tejomay hai ambar
Prithvi hari bhari sthapit sthir
Swarg aur sooraj bhi sthir
Aise kis devta ki upasana karein hum avi dekar

Garbh mein apne agni dhaaran kar paida kar
Vyapa tha jal idhar udhar neeche upar
Jagaa chuke vo ka ekameva pran bankar
Aise kis devta ki upasana karein hum avi dekar

Om ! Srishti nirmata swarg rachiyata purvaj raksha kar
Satya dharma palak atul jal niyamak raksha kar
Phaili hain dishayen bahu jaisi uski sab mein sab par
Aise hi devta ki upasana kare hum avi dekar
Aise hi devta ki upasana kare hum avi dekar

In the beginning was the Divinity in his splendour,

Who is the Deity we shall worship with our offerings?

It is he who bestows soul-fource and vigour, whose guidance all men invoke,
the Devas invoke whose shadow is immortal life-and death.
Who is the Deity we shall worship with our offerings?

It is he who by his greatness became the one King of the breathing and the seeing,
who is the Lord of man and bird and beast.
Who is the Deity we shall worship with our offerings?

It is the through whose glory the snow-clad mountains rose,
and the ocean spread with the rivery, they say.
His arms are the quarters of the sky.
Who is the Deity we shall worship with our offerings?

It is he through whom the heaven is strong and the earth firm,
who has steadied the light and the sky's vault,
and measured out the sphere of clouds in the mid-region.
Who is the Deity we shall worship with our offerings?

It is he to whom heaven and earth, placed in the light by his grace, look up,
radiant with the mind while over them the sum, rising, brightly shines.
Who is the Deity we shall worship our offerings?

When the mighty waters came, carrying the universal germ, producing the flame of life,
then dwelt there in harmony the One Spirit of the Devas.
Who is the Deity we shall worship with our offerings?

It is he who in his might surveyed the waters, conferring skill and creating worship
he, the God of Gods, the One and only One.
Who is the Deity we shall worship with our offerings?

Father of the world - may he not destoy us who with
Truth as his Law made the heavens and produced waters, vast and beautiful
Who is the Deity we shall worship with our offerings?

Lord of creation ! no one other than thee pervades all these that have come into being.
May that be ours, for which our prayers rise, may we be masters of many treasures!

I was looking for the DVD since last couple of years. A bit disappointed on knowing that it is a rare comodity than I had expected. I just cant explain the feeling or emotions I go through when I hear its title song. Its a total hypnotising experiance reminding me of my childhood days...........If anybody can send me the title songs in Mp3 format on my web address dthesmarty@yahoo.com I would be extremely thankful to them.

Rigveda 10,129: Nasadiya Sukta (The hymn of creation)

nâsadâsînno sadâsît tadânîm nâsîdrajo no vyomâ paro yat
kim âvarîvah kuha kasya sharmann ambhah kimâsîdgahanam gabhîram
THEN was not non-existent nor existent: there was no realm of air, no sky beyond it.
What covered in, and where? and what gave shelter? Was water there, unfathomed depth of water?

na mrtyurâsîdamrtam na tarhi na râtryâ ahna âsît praketah
ânîdavâtam svadhayâ tadekam tasmâddhânyanna parah kimcan âsa
Death was not then, nor was there aught immortal: no sign was there, the day's and night's divider.
That One Thing, breathless, breathed by its own nature: apart from it was nothing whatsoever.

tama âsît tamasâ gûlhamagre 'praketam salilam sarvam â idam
tucchyenâbhvapihitam yadâsît tapasastanmahinâjâyataikam
Darkness there was: at first concealed in darknew this All was indiscriminated chaos.
All that existed then was void and form less: by the great power of Warmth was born that Unit.

kâmastadagre samavartatâdhî manaso retah prathamam yadâsît
sato bandhum asati niravindan hrdi pratîshyâ kavayo manîshâ
Thereafter rose Desire in the beginning, Desire, the primal seed and germ of Spirit.
Sages who searched with their heart's thought discovered the existent's kinship in the non-existent.

tirashcino vitato rashmir eshâm adhah svidâsîdupari svidasît
retodhâ âsan mahimâna âsan svadhâ avastât prayatih parastât
Transversely was their severing line extended: what was above it then, and what below it?
There were begetters, there were mighty forces, free action here and energy up yonder

Who verily knows and who can here declare it, whence it was born and whence comes this creation?
TheGods are later than this world's production. Who knows then whence it first came into being?

iyam visrshtiryata âbabhûva yadi vâ dadhe yadi vâ na
yo asyâdhyakshah parame vyoman so anga veda yadi vâ na veda
He, the first origin of this creation, whether he formed it all or did not form it,
Whose eye controls this world in highest heaven, he verily knows it, or perhaps he knows not.

The music for this song (the whole serial) as well as many great movies like ankur, Sardari Begum etc is by Vanraj Bhatia. He is undoubtedly the most qualified music director in Bollywood with equal mastery on both Indian and Western music. Check for his filmography on imdb. A truly living genius. Much of his work is easily available for download on the net
Thanks

Srishtee se pehle sat nahin thaa, asat bhi nahin
Antariksh bhi nahin, akash bhin nahin thaa
chhipaa thaa kyaa kahaan, kisne dhakaa thaa
us pal ko agam, atal jal bhi kahaan thaa

Nahi thi mritiyu, Ji Amarta bhi nahi,
nahi tha din, raat bhi nahi,
Hawa bhi nahi, Saans thi swyamev phir bhi,

Ommmmm,
Karm bankar beej pehla jo Uga,
Kaam bankar woh jaga.
Kaviyo, Gyaniyo ne jana,
Asat aur Sat Ka nikat sambandh pehchana

(my memory fails me here)

Pehle sambandh me - Hiranya ..... neeche, Param tatva Uspar,
Upar ya neeche.
Vah tha bata hua. Purush aur Stree bana Hua.

The second last line in one of the stanzas as given here is meaningless.

It has probably been copy pasted by the poster from other websites which repeat the same mistake.

“Jagaa chuke vo ka ekameva pran bankar” has no meaning.

The line should be “Jagaa jo devonkaa ekameva pran bankar” (that primordial principle which awoke as the one and only life force behind all gods, deities).

If one listens carefully with headphones it becomes very clear.
